What is eczema?

Eczema or dermatitis are the same and often used interchangeably. They are broad terms. At a basic level it means inflammation of the skin. The skin becomes red, swollen and may be cracked, weeping and can be scaly.

There are many different causes and types of eczema or dermatitis including atopic, allergic, irritant, contact and asteatotic (due to excessively dry skin). Dermatologists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of eczema. They will help find the cause of your problem and guide you towards the correct treatment.

Treatment options for eczema

Treatment of eczema depends on the cause and severity. Often topical corticosteroids are used, but sometimes light treatment or oral treatment is required. Biologic treatments have recently become approved on the PBS for management of moderate-to-severe chronic atopic dermatitis. Seeking the advice of a dermatologist is important and will help solve your problem so you can live more comfortably.
