Non Surgical Periorbital or Perioral Rejuventation: Latest treatment techniques

Our patients commonly seek advice on how to improve the skin around the eyes and mouth. Most of these patients are seeking non surgical treatment options. Often the motivating factor for presentation is when skin becomes lax and wrinkles develop making a person look tired or less vital.

Periorbital Rejuvenation

In the past fully ablative lasers were used to achieve results. This results in significant downtime and prolonged healing.  We now know that we can achieve similar effects with high density hybrid fractionated laser resurfacing. This technique improves the tightness and quality of the eyelids for those who are not ready for surgical intervention

How is treatment performed

Protective contacts are placed in the eyes to protect them from a laser beam. The laser is then rolled across the region of the skin until a desired amount of energy is established to achieve results. You will be red and swollen for 2-3 days and the skin will shed day 4-6.  Generally, two treatment sessions are required to achieve the desired result.

Synergistic combinations

This  treatment is complemented with anti-wrinkle injections performed either one week before the laser resurfacing.

Perioral Rejuvenation

Treatment options:

  1. Hybrid Fractionated Laser: this treatment can be performed at a density that approaches the results of a fully ablative treatment. 2 treatment sessions are required with the same healing process as that experienced after periorbital rejuvenation.  It is less painful than fully ablative and has less chance of persistent erythema after treatment.

  2. Fully Ablative Laser: for those after a  single treatment and who are less concerned about significant downtime and a longer recovery time, fully ablative laser may be a consideration

Synergistic combinations:

  1. Dermal fillers - Dermal fillers are either injected into the skin to fill in wrinkles and add volume to the face or added to the skin via laser assisted drug delivery. They can be used to reduce the appearance of perioral rhytides by filling in the lines around the mouth and lips.

  2. Botulinum toxin injections - Botulinum toxin injections, commonly known as Botox, are used to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles. They can be used to reduce the appearance of perioral rhytides by relaxing the muscles around the mouth and lips.

  3. Surgical procedures - Surgical procedures such as facelifts and lip lifts performed by experienced plastic surgeons can be used to reduce the appearance of perioral rhytides by tightening the skin and underlying muscles.
