Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
At Northern Sydney Dermatology and Laser (NSDL), we offer Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a versatile and highly effective treatment for skin cancers, pre-cancerous lesions, and sun-damaged skin. PDT is an innovative, non-invasive therapy that selectively targets abnormal cells while preserving healthy tissue. Our experienced dermatologists use the latest techniques, including laser-assisted PDT, to ensure optimal results tailored to your unique skin needs.
What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?
Photodynamic Therapy combines a light-sensitive medication (photosensitiser) with a specific light source to destroy cancerous or abnormal skin cells. It’s an effective treatment for a wide range of skin conditions, including:
Skin Cancers: Superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and Bowen’s disease (early squamous cell carcinoma).
Field Cancerisation and Sun Damage: Treats widespread areas of pre-cancerous changes caused by prolonged sun exposure, such as actinic keratoses (AK).

Types of Photodynamic Therapy at NSDL
PDT for Skin Cancers:
Designed to precisely target and destroy superficial skin cancers, such as BCC and Bowen’s disease.
Especially effective for cancers on cosmetically sensitive areas like the face, scalp, and neck.
PDT for Field Cancerisation and Sun Damage:
Treats large areas of sun-damaged skin, addressing not only visible lesions but also microscopic changes that could develop into skin cancers.
Ideal for patients with extensive sun exposure, particularly on the scalp, face, chest, and hands.
Laser-Assisted PDT:
In some cases, lasers are used to enhance the penetration and uptake of the photosensitising medication into the skin.
This advanced technique improves treatment efficacy, especially for thicker lesions or challenging areas.
Your dermatologist at NSDL will assess your skin and determine the most appropriate type of PDT for your condition, ensuring the best possible outcome.
Benefits of Photodynamic Therapy
Highly Targeted: Destroys abnormal cells while sparing healthy tissue.
Non-Surgical: A gentle, non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime.
Versatile Applications: Treats a range of conditions, from superficial skin cancers to widespread sun damage.
Enhanced with Laser Technology: Laser-assisted PDT provides greater precision and effectiveness for challenging cases.
Cosmetic Improvement: Reduces redness, improves skin texture, and rejuvenates sun-damaged areas.
The Photodynamic Therapy Process at NSDL
Consultation and Diagnosis: Our dermatologists will thoroughly assess your skin and discuss your treatment plan. We’ll advise on whether standard PDT or laser-assisted PDT is most suitable for your condition.
Application of the Photosensitiser: A topical photosensitising medication is applied to the affected area and left to absorb for a specified time, depending on the condition being treated.
Light or Laser Activation: After the medication has been absorbed, it is activated using a specific light source or, in some cases, a laser. This process selectively destroys abnormal cells while preserving healthy skin.
Post-Treatment Care: Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to help your skin heal and protect it from sunlight during the recovery period.
What to Expect After PDT
Mild Redness and Peeling: Treated areas may become red and peel for a few days as the damaged cells shed.
Sun Protection: Your skin will be more sensitive to light following PDT. It’s essential to avoid direct sunlight and wear a high-SPF sunscreen.
Quick Recovery: Most patients recover within a week and notice healthier, rejuvenated skin.
Follow-Up Care: Your dermatologist will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure the best results.
