Pigmentation
At NSDL we specialise in addressing pigmentation issues with advanced treatments tailored to your individual skin needs. Our dermatologists offer the most effective solutions to help you achieve clearer, even-toned skin.
Pigmentation refers to the natural colour of the skin, primarily determined by melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes. When there is an imbalance or overproduction of melanin, it can lead to common pigmentation concerns such as melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). While these conditions are generally harmless, they can significantly affect one’s appearance and self-confidence.
Understanding the causes of Pigmentation
Several factors can lead to pigmentation issues, including:
Sun Exposure (UV Damage): Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light triggers melanin production, leading to sunspots or solar lentigines.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, menopause, or while using oral contraceptives can cause melasma, a condition characterised by dark patches on the skin.
Aging: As the skin ages, it becomes less effective at regulating melanin, which may cause uneven pigmentation.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): This occurs after skin injuries or inflammation, such as acne, where dark spots form in the affected areas.
How is pigmentation treated?
Pigmentation concerns can be effectively managed with the right combination of treatments tailored to your skin. At NSDL, we are committed to offering the most advanced and effective options to help you achieve a clearer, more radiant complexion.
Treatment will depends on the type of pigmentation that you have. While treatment is not medically necessary for pigmentation, treatment is often sought for aesthetic concerns. It is essential that a qualified dermatologist checks your skin to ensure that you have no atypical moles on your skin. At NSDL we will assess your skin and inform you what treatment is most suitable to address your needs.
At NSDL, we offer a comprehensive range of treatments designed to address pigmentation issues:
1. Topical Treatments
Prescription Creams: Our dermatologists may prescribe creams containing active ingredients such as hydroquinone, retinoids, or azelaic acid. These ingredients help lighten dark spots by reducing melanin production and encouraging skin cell turnover.
Brightening Serums: Products containing Vitamin C, niacinamide, and other antioxidants can improve skin brightness and reduce the appearance of pigmentation.
2. Laser and Light-Based Treatments
Q-Switched Laser: This advanced laser treatment targets areas of hyperpigmentation by breaking down excess melanin. It is effective in treating melasma, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. Multiple sessions are typically required for optimal results.
BBL (Broadband Light): BBL is a powerful treatment that uses intense pulsed light to target pigmentation, sun damage, and age spots. This non-invasive procedure helps to even out skin tone and can also improve skin texture and collagen production.
BBL/Moxi Combination Therapy: For more comprehensive skin rejuvenation, BBL can be combined with Moxi laser technology, which works by creating micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate repair and renewal. This combination is effective for treating pigmentation, sun damage, and early signs of aging, while improving overall skin quality and clarity.
Fraxel Laser: Fraxel technology is used to treat sun damage, pigmentation, and scarring. It stimulates the body’s natural healing process and promotes the formation of new skin cells, effectively improving skin tone and texture.
3. Chemical Peels
Glycolic and Salicylic Acid Peels: These peels are designed to exfoliate the upper layers of the skin, encouraging cell turnover and improving the appearance of pigmentation. Peels at NSDL are customized to suit your skin type and pigmentation severity.
4. Sun Protection Advice
Prevention is key to managing pigmentation. Our dermatologists emphasise the importance of using broad-spectrum sunscreens daily, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure. Consistent sun protection is essential to prevent pigmentation from worsening or recurring.
5. Combination treatment
Often a combination approach is used depending on the type of pigmentation being treated.
