Rhinophyma

Rhinophyma is a form of rosacea that typically affects the nose, resulting in a thickened, bulbous appearance. It is more common in men over the age of 50. While the exact cause is unknown, it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and medical factors. Rhinophyma is not only aesthetically distressing, but it can also cause breathing difficulties and discomfort. Fortunately, it can be effectively treated in a single session using CO2 laser resurfacing.

What is Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is the result of the progressive thickening of the skin over the nose, leading to an enlarged, irregular appearance. This condition can be debilitating and embarrassing, but it can be significantly improved with laser treatment. The CO2 laser precisely removes excess tissue, reshaping the nose and restoring a more natural look.

  • The exact cause is unknown, most likely a combination of genetic and medical problems

  • It is a debilitating and embarrassing problem, that can also affect breathing and cause discomfort. The great thing is it can be fixed with one simple treatment.

CO2 Laser for Rhinophyma treatment

At NSDL, we utilise the fully ablative CO2 laser, which is the gold standard for rhinophyma treatment. This laser allows us to safely and precisely vaporise the excess tissue, restoring the natural shape of the nose. The results are typically long-lasting, and rhinophyma rarely returns after treatment.

What to expect during treatment

  • The procedure takes approximately 60 minutes.

  • A  combination of topical local and a local anesthetic injection nose block and will be applied to ensure comfort during the procedure.

  • Most patients report minimal discomfort and no pain following the treatment.

Downtime and Recovery

  • After the procedure, the nose will be crusted for approximately 7-10 days as it heals.

  • Redness and swelling may persist for up to 4 weeks depending on the intensity of the treatment.

  • You can resume normal activities immediately

  • Skin peeling may occur starting 48-72 hours after treatment and continue for 4-7 days.

Aftercare Instructions and Follow-Up

Following the procedure, it is crucial to follow our aftercare guidelines to minimize downtime and achieve optimal results:

  1. Cleansing (AM/PM): Use a vinegar wash or mild cleanser to clean the treated area.

  2. Days 1-3: Apply Stratacel (medical-grade dressing gel) to maintain a moist environment and support healing.

  3. Days 4-10: Use Toleriane Sensitive Facial Moisturiser to keep the area hydrated and comfortable.

  4. Sun Avoidance: Avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours after the procedure.

If you experience prolonged redness, swelling, or signs of infection, please contact our clinic immediately.

Results: You can expect significant improvements after just one treatment with long-lasting results. Rhinophyma rarely recurs after CO2 laser treatment, making it a highly effective solution.
