Skin Resurfacing
The decline in skin quality over time is a multifactorial process related to genetics, lifestyle, intrinsic ageing, and sun exposure.
At NSDL we specialise in laser dermatology and employ a unique combination of laser treatments customised to your specific needs, to address the various aspects of skin aging so as restore uniformity, texture, and radiance. NSDL has every wavelength available and can employ a unique range of devices specific to your needs. It’s important that equipment remains up-to-date and innovative so you achieve rapid, safe and effective outcomes specific to your needs. Most of the above results were achieved in one session of the multilayered laser.
Laser skin resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is a highly effective procedure that uses energy-based devices to improve the texture and appearance of your skin. This treatment can address fine lines, age spots, sun damage, uneven skin tone, acne scars and photodamage. However, it cannot treat sagging skin.
At NSDL, we offer a range of ablative and non-ablative lasers, including 1927nm, 1470nm, CO2, Erbium, and hybrid laser systems, to customise your treatment based on your skin's needs and desired results.
Laser resurfacing can help with:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Uneven skin texture or pigmentation
The procedure refreshes your skin and enhances its overall appearance, leaving it smoother and tighter.
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing can be performed using ablative or non-ablative lasers, and the intensity of the treatment is tailored to your individual goals and available downtime.
Ablative Lasers: These lasers remove the outer layer of skin and heat the underlying layers to stimulate collagen production. The results are dramatic, but recovery can take longer. We use CO2 and Erbium lasers for ablative resurfacing.
Non-Ablative Lasers: These lasers penetrate deeper layers of the skin without damaging the surface. They require less recovery time, but results are more gradual. Examples include the 1927 nm and 1470 nm lasers.
Fractional Lasers: Both ablative and non-ablative lasers can be used in fractional mode, where only a fraction of the skin is treated, leaving surrounding areas untouched. This shortens recovery time and reduces the risk of side effects.
Customising your treatment
At NSDL, we understand that each patient’s skin is unique. The degree of aggression and amount of downtime required for laser resurfacing can be customized according to your needs:
Mild Treatments: Offer minimal downtime with more gradual results.
Intensive Treatments: Provide more dramatic results but require a longer recovery period (up to 10 days).
Your dermatologist will work with you to determine the best treatment intensity to meet your skincare goals while balancing recovery time.
What to Expect During Treatment
During the procedure:
Numbing cream will be applied to your skin for 60mings
The laser is directed at the treatment area, and sessions typically last between 30 minutes to 1 hours, depending on the size of the area and the type of laser used.
You may experience a warming sensation, similar to a sunburn, during the procedure.
Recovery and Downtime:
The downtime and skin shedding vary based on the intensity of the treatment:
Mild Treatment: Expect 3-4 days of redness and swelling. You may return to normal activities immediately, and makeup can be applied the day after treatment.
Intensive Treatment: Redness and swelling may last 5-7 days, with potential for prolonged "pinkness" up to 4 weeks. Peeling and flaking typically start 48-72 hours post-treatment and last about 4-7 days.
Regardless of the intensity, bronzing or sandpaper-like texture may appear as the skin begins to shed and regenerate.
Risks and Side Effects
Laser resurfacing is generally safe, but potential side effects include:
Swelling, redness, and itching
Infection: Possible reactivation of viral infections like herpes.
Changes in skin color: Temporary or permanent hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, particularly in people with darker skin.
Scarring: More common with ablative lasers but can be minimized with proper aftercare.
Aftercare Instructions and Follow Up
Adhering to aftercare instructions is essential for minimizing downtime and achieving optimal results:You will be provided with a detailed aftercare plan to follow at home, ensuring smooth recovery and long-lasting results.
Cleansing (AM/PM): Vinegar Wash or Mild Cleanser
Days 1-3: Stratacel (Medical Grade Dressing Gel)
Patients should apply a pea-sized amount of Stratacel to the treated area.
This dressing gel will maintain a moist environment to support wound healing, minimize water loss, and protect the skin.
It has been shown to reduce redness by up to 50% during the healing process.
Day 4-10:Toleriane Sensitive Facial Moisturiser
Patients should apply a 5c-sized amount of Toleriane Sensitive Facial Moisturiser evenly over the treated area.
The moisturiser is rich in calming and cooling ingredients such as glycerine, ceramides, and B3 to soothe and hydrate the skin.
This step should be done after cleansing to ensure the skin remains hydrated and comfortable.
Patients are encouraged to spray Thermal Spring Water on the skin at any time to hydrate and provide additional comfort.
Sun Avoidance: Patients should avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours after the procedure.
Sunscreen: Sunscreen should not be applied until after peeling is complete to prevent irritation on freshly resurfaced skin.
Patients are encouraged to send photos Day 1,3,6 after the procedure
If you experience prolonged redness, swelling, or signs of infection, contact the clinic immediately. While complications are rare, they should be addressed promptly. Follow-up visits are generally recommended every 8 weeks until the scar reaches a satisfactory point.
