Scar Treatment Options:  Latest Advances in Scar Reduction and Treatment

Before & After

Rarely is a single treatment alone effective. Multiple techniques combing laser and medical therapy are required for effective results. See some examples above.

Scarring can occur as a result of injury, surgery, or skin conditions such as acne, and can have a significant impact on a person's self-esteem and quality of life.  Treatment is influenced by scar type and appearanceLatest research indicates that combination of lasers  and laser assisted drug delivery are the first line approach to the management of scars

A combination of red lasers and fractionated ablative lasers ( and sometimes other energy based devices) combined with laser assisted drug delivery are employed. This paper was released in 2020. These are the guidelines and recommendations at NSDL we follow.

Laser Surgical scar revision may be necessary to improve the appearance of scars. This is generally performed with a combination of ablative and other energy devices. A treatment plan is required based on your individual case and type of scarring.

Types of Scars:

1. Hypertrophic scars: These scars are raised and often appear reddish in color. They develop when the body produces too much collagen during the healing process. A combination of red lasers, fractionated lasers and medication is used to manage these. Usually, 3-4  sessions separated by 4-6 wks are required to manage this

2. Keloid scars: These scars are similar to hypertrophic scars but can grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound. They are more common in people with darker skin.

3. Atrophic scars: These scars are typically flat and depressed, and can occur as a result of acne, chickenpox, or injury.

4. Contracture scars: These scars can occur after a burn or other injury that causes the skin to tighten and restrict movement.

5. Stretch marks: These are a type of scar that forms when the skin is stretched rapidly, such as during pregnancy or weight gain.

6. Surgical scars: These are scars that result from surgical incisions.

7. Traumatic scars: These scars are caused by injuries such as cuts, burns, or abrasions.

8. Acne Scars: these are unique and require their own approach to treatment.
